Clash of Clans: A Mobile Gaming Storm

Released almost three years ago, Clash of Clans has become one of the most downloaded and most played gaming app in history. In fact, it ranks as the number one highest grossing game in both Google Play and iOS, far surpassing other games like Angry Birds and Candy Crush.

In Clash of Clans, players build their bases and train troops using different resources – either gold, elixir or gems – and try to raid other players’ bases while defending their own. Successful raids would earn players in-game rewards and move them higher in a global ranking system.

Compared to other real-time strategy games, building structures and training troops in Clash of Clans takes hours or even days. This keeps players keenly planning their next move, which is why the game burns at the back of players’ heads even when they’re not playing. The other draw of the game is the ranking system, with every player – and the clans that they build – each vying to be the world’s number 1 player or clan.

CoC in Singapore

Not surprisingly, Clash of Clans has a huge player base in Singapore with at least 10 Facebook communities devoted to the game and its Singapore players. Some of the top clans in Singapore are #COW#, #SecretService#, (I)mmortals, #The Legends and *1210*.

Given its popularity, there is a high level of competition in playing Clash of Clans and the highest-ranking players devote a lot of their time and resources to the game. This is exemplified by George Yao, who was the top player of the game for nearly 6 months, but who ultimately retired from playing when he realized that it has taken control of his life.unnamed

Other Issues

Another concern raised about the game is that its Clan system – which allows some players to demote, remove or exclude other players from joining their clans – has made many young players, particularly boys in grade school, feel ostracized or bullied. Some players have also taken qualm about some recent updates in the game.

Despite any concerns, things look bright for Supercell, creator of the game. As of 2015, the game is reported to be earning US$5 million per day, thanks to its 8.5 million active daily players. Supercell’s other games are Hay Day and Boom Beach.
